Job Description
Columbia Mental Health is seeking a compassionate and skilled Child and Adolescent Therapist to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team in Washington, DC. As part of a comprehensive psychiatric practice, you will provide individualized, evidence-based therapeutic services to children, adolescents, and their families who are experiencing a range of emotional, behavioral, and psychiatric concerns. Working in an inclusive, supportive, and empathetic environment, you will collaborate closely with psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and other mental health professionals to deliver holistic care that improves patient outcomes. In this role, you will conduct thorough biopsychosocial assessments, formulate diagnostic impressions, and develop collaborative, strengths-based treatment plans tailored to the needs of young clients. You will provide individual, family, and, when appropriate, group therapy using advanced therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), play therapy, trauma-informed interventions, and other evidence-based modalities suited to child and adolescent populations. You will monitor progress, adjust interventions as needed, and maintain clear, timely, and accurate documentation in our electronic health record system. The Child and Adolescent Therapist will regularly communicate and coordinate care with parents or caregivers, school personnel, pediatricians, and community providers to support continuity of care and reinforce treatment goals across settings. You will perform ongoing risk assessments, including evaluation of safety concerns such as self-harm or harm to others, and implement appropriate crisis intervention and safety planning procedures when needed. Sensitivity to cultural, developmental, and family dynamics is essential, and you will be expected to uphold the highest standards of professional ethics, confidentiality, and trauma-informed practice. At Columbia Mental Health, you will have the opportunity to engage with leading mental health professionals and contribute to a collaborative, multidisciplinary care model. Our culture prioritizes innovation and continuous learning; you will participate in regular case consultations, supervision or peer review, and internal trainings focused on current best practices in child and adolescent mental health. You will be encouraged to pursue professional development through workshops, certifications, and specialized trainings, with support from leadership to expand your clinical skills and areas of expertise. Day-to-day, you will manage a structured caseload, maintain a consistent, therapeutic schedule, and ensure that all clinical, regulatory, and payer documentation standards are met. You will help shape treatment pathways and program development initiatives that enhance services for youth and families in the Washington, DC area. As a key member of the Healthcare & Medical Services department, you will embody our mission of providing accessible, compassionate, and effective psychiatric and therapeutic care to children and adolescents. This position is ideal for a clinician who is passionate about working with young people, values collaboration and professional growth, and is eager to contribute to an innovative, patient-centered practice. Columbia Mental Health offers a competitive salary, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, retirement benefits, and a supportive hybrid work environment that emphasizes work-life balance while maintaining high standards of clinical care.

Frequently asked questions
What license do I need to apply?
An active state license in your discipline (PT, OT, SLP, LCSW, LPC, BCBA, etc.) in good standing. Therapy licensure is state-specific — the PT, OT, and ASLP-IC compacts let you practice in member states without a separate license.
Is this a school-year or year-round position?
School-based therapy roles typically follow a 9- or 10-month school-year calendar with summers off. Outpatient, hospital, home-health, and telehealth positions are year-round with PTO. Both options are widely available — check the job description for specifics.
What experience is expected?
Most therapy roles welcome new grads through mid-career clinicians. Specialty positions (acute care, NICU, pediatric feeding, hand therapy) typically prefer 2+ years plus relevant certifications.
